These attacks were believed to have been
executed by Islamic terrorists group called Al-Qaeda led by Osama bin laden.
They included 19 terrorists who hijacked four planes. Two jets (American
Airlines Flight 11 and United Airline Flight 175) were directed to the Twin
towers that is the Southern and Northern towers. The
third jet (Airlines Flight 77) exploded at Arlington where it was directed. The
fourth jet (United Airlines Flight 93) was directed to the US Capital building
in Washington but the passengers over powered the hijackers and it crashed at Shanksville.
About 3000 people lost their lives these included 19 hijackers, and 227
passengers aboard the four planes. All these coordinated attacks took about 2
hours.
After this attack the government under the
leadership of the then President George w bush banned all the international
flights, there was also through screening at airports which almost paralyzed
the operations at the airports. They were also rumors that the terrorist were
planning other attacks on the American soil.
Government also took tough measures to ensure that the Al-Qaeda group
dismantled and finished completely. It sought the UN Security Council to ensure
that the whole world join the fight against terrorism and to ensure that no
other country is attacked. Countries which were suspected to be supporting the
terrorist like Iran and North Korea faced hash sanctions.
The 9/11 attack left a mark in history
and revolutionized the way of life. After the attack there was a sense of
insecurity and fear among many Americans. Many people around the world also
became fearful since America is regarded to be the strongest Nation in the
world, and if it can be attacked then the rest of the world was not safe.
Surveys conducted in America showed that some students lacked sleep due to the
fear and stress level were high to the normal citizens of America.
The attacks resulted into strong
international cooperation in the fight against terrorism. Some of the measures
taken included freezing of assets of those suspected to be funding terrorism
and imposition of sanctions to countries like North Korea and Iran. Another was
to attack the AL-Qaeda group which was predominant in Afghanistan and large
part of Pakistan. Private conversation over the phone and internet started to
be monitored. Although this was infringing into people privacy it was accepted
since it was worth the cause. The attacks have brought a lot of suspicion in
the society; people who are doing activities that are unknown are mistrusted
and watched closely. Religious suspicion also is prime with a lot of Americans
reluctant in embracing their Muslim counterparts.
The September 11attacks resulted to a huge loss
of lives and property. It has also revolutionized the way of life in the
society. There is a lot of screening in public places and travel hubs. People
have become suspicious with unknown people and activities and the fight against
terrorism has become a worldwide role.
